This run of screenshots shows how to use Windows XP to use a PPoE connection to get started using your new SBC Yahoo DSL account and bypass the installation CD which takes extra time and resources installing things and collecting information that you may not want or want to release. Other OSes may require you to download and install the PPoE protocol/drivers/software (download the ppoe software here or do a google search for it)
When you sign up they send you a modem and an "installation CD". Stay away from the installation CD. This CD takes about 15 minutes to go through on a really fast computer, installing tons of stuff you don't need and leading you through a bizarre maze of hyperlinks to get to the point you can reach in 30 seconds by following the instructions below (registering your own username and password):

Open Start Menu / Settings / Network Connections and in the dialog box choose to "Create a new Connection"

The "New Connection Wizard" is launched... Click "Next"

Choose "Connect to the Internet" (should be checked already by default)
Click "Next"

Change the checked radio button to the one labeled: "Set up my Connection Manually"
"Click "Next"

Change the checked radio button to the one labeled: "Connect Using a Broadband Connection the Requires a Username and Password"
Click "Next"

In this box, give the connection a name that you will recognize, the name does not matter, it will only be the connections' label when you open "Network Connections" in the Windows Control Panel
Click "Next"

Here is where you will enter your connection specifications. What you enter here allows you connect to the internet through your DSL modem using PPoE.
Enter the username:
sbcyahooreg@sbcglobal.net
Enter the password:
sbcyahooreg (and confirm it in the box below)
Make sure you uncheck "Turn off Internet Connection Firewall for this Connection"
Click "Next"

Now you hvae done all you need to do to establish the connection, you can check the box labled "Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop" or you can find the connection in your "Network Connections" folder after you:
Click "Finish"
Now that you've set your PC up with the ability to connect to the internet, you'll need to get to the registration site so you can specify your own username and password.
Go to: https://sbcreg.sbcglobal.net/ - This is where you will need to pick your own username and password. This will "register" your DSL line on the network. Once you have entered your username and paswword and it has indicated that it has received them and you are registered, Leave. Do not let them intall any software or make any other adjustments and this point, rest assured, you are now registered, have your primary mail address initiated and can access the internet and SBC Yahoo DSL services.
Now you can disconnect your modem and open your Network Connections. Find the connection you have made and open it and change the username and password from the sbcyahooreg@sbcglobal.net etc, to YOUR username and password that you registed (remember, your username will be the full email address, ie: johndoe@sbcglobal.net). and save these changes
You can now reconnect and surf.
